Alexz Johnson- Skipping Stone

My girl Alexz delivers again (honestly, she has never faltered). Alexz and Brandon, her brother, released this track a couple of months ago. Frankly, it took me a few listens to really catch on to the groove as Alexz’s material usually has a more lyrically tangible chorus- but I am now in love. Skipping Stone was mastered by Greg Wells who is also famous for some of Kelly Clarkson and Katy Perry’s monster hits. Greg and Alexz first worked together on material for her EP with Epic; those can now be heard on her Voodoo album.

Applause!Applause!Applause! I used to watch Instant Star, and I loved it (of course). And I’ve followed Alexz during and since, through her ups and downs. The five songs of hers produced by Epic were just that, epic. They were beautiful, triumphant and filled with full emotional string orchestras. The versions on “The Basement Recordings” can’t quite compare to those demos, but makes me proud that one of my favorite artists still chooses to fight regardless.  khylen: Back in the day when I used to watch The N (now known as TeenNick), I did not watch Instant Star starring Alexz Johnson because I was too busy watching boys on Degrassi: The Next Generation and South of Nowhere. But I do remember jamming to the theme song of Instant Star because it was undeniably catchy. Yesterday I stumbled upon Alexz Johnson’s The Basement Recordings, a collection of early recordings for the singer-songwriter’s canceled 2008 Epic Records debut. I think I’ve listened to this EP three times already. Very confused as to why it was canceled considering what I have to choose from in the music section of stores sometimes. Johnson has talent and if you’re looking for some good indie rock/pop, I definitely recommend looking on iTunes for The Basement Recordings. “Running With the Devil” and “Spin” are personal favorites.

I’ve been watching Alexz for over 6 years, and after a long battle she finally released her debut solo album, Voodoo. It’s one the best albums I’ve heard of the past year, and definitely worth a listen.
